Are the donuts at Bear Donut worth the hype?
Bear Donut in NYC,NY
We were walking to a restaurant on a Saturday, when we noticed a group of people outside Bear Donut, who was serving mochi donuts, these Japanese donuts made with sweet rice flour. If you never had mochi donuts, they are slightly sweet with a stretchy chew and a very slightly crispy outer layer. We had a glimpse at the small shop and then left, having a lunch half and hour later (although i admit that i was ready for a little aperitif…). Few weeks later, we went back and decided to get their glazed donut (classic -$4), a coconut ($4) and a cookies and cream ($4.50). We sat outside ready for a tasting that unfortunately was disappointing: I loved the icing, but not the donut itself that I thought was bland. To the point that I did not finish them, something very rare with me. You often say that you should not judge a book by its cover and this was a good example: these donuts looked good and appetizing, but were not good. I prefer the ones at Mochinut or even Paris Baguette. I’ll pass.
