My Trip to France: Creperie Grand Maman in Grenoble

One of the things I always love about traveling through France is that every region manages to embrace specialties from somewhere else. During our time in Grenoble, we stopped for lunch at Crêperie Grand Maman, a cozy spot dedicated to one of France's greatest comfort foods: crêpes and galettes. If you've ever ordered a savory crêpe in Brittany, you'll know that it is actually called a galette. Unlike sweet crêpes, galettes are made with buckwheat flour, giving them a darker color, a slightly nutty flavor, and a heartier texture that makes them the perfect base for savory fillings. I ordered the Papi Norbert (10.50 Eur), a galette filled with ham and Emmental cheese. Sometimes, the simplest combinations are the best, and this was exactly the case here. The buckwheat galette had that slightly crisp edge and earthy flavor that pairs so well with melted cheese. The ham added a touch of saltiness, making it a satisfying and comforting meal. Jodi opted for the Papi Léon (9.50 Eur), featuring just Emmental cheese. While simpler, it showcased just how good a well-made galette can be when the ingredients are allowed to shine.

To accompany my lunch, I had a glass of dry cider (3.50 Eur), which is pretty much mandatory whenever I am eating galettes. Then, there was only one possible choice for dessert for me: whenever I see beurre-sucre on a menu, my decision is made. Priced at 4.90 Eur, this simple crêpe combined salted butter and sugar, creating one of the most delicious desserts imaginable. It may sound basic, but the contrast between the rich butter and the sweetness of the sugar is fantastic.

Crêperie Grand Maman delivered exactly what we were looking for: classic galettes, good cider, and a simple but delicious dessert. It might not be the best creperie in Grenoble, but the food and atmosphere were perfect for a relaxed lunch.

Enjoy (I did)!
