Bouillon Grenette in Grenoble, France
Sometimes, the best meals in France are not the elaborate tasting menus or the trendy restaurants everyone is talking about. Sometimes, they are found in places where locals, tourists, families, and students are all sitting side by side, enjoying traditional French dishes at reasonable prices. That's the spirit behind a bouillon. Long before they became trendy again, bouillons were designed as places where people could enjoy simple, comforting meals without spending a fortune. Think of them as the original French casual dining restaurants: straightforward menus, classic recipes, efficient service, and an atmosphere that welcomes everyone. Over the last few years, bouillons have made a big comeback throughout France, celebrating dishes that generations of French people grew up eating.
So, a few weeks ago, we had lunch at Bouillon Grenette in Grenoble. Starting simple, to drink, Jodi ordered an Orangina. There is something wonderfully French about having an Orangina with lunch. While visitors often gravitate toward wine, Orangina remains one of those iconic drinks that instantly brings me back to my childhood. For my appetizer, I ordered the pâté en croûte (5.70 Eur). This is one of those dishes I always enjoy when I see it on a menu. A good pâté en croûte combines a flavorful meat filling with a beautifully baked crust, creating a perfect balance of texture and richness. It is a classic French appetizer that showcases the country's love for charcuterie and traditional preparations. We also shared fries topped with Saint Marcelin cheese sauce (4.90 Eur), an alpine version of poutine, that was quite decadent. For her entree, Jodi decided to order two lighter dishes. The first was a tarte à l'oignon (4.30 Eur), France's version of the onion tart. Savory, comforting, and packed with sweet onions, it felt like the kind of dish that belongs in a bouillon. She also had a Caesar salad (3.50 Eur) with vinaigrette, which provided a fresher contrast to the richness of the tart. As for me, I couldn't resist the aiguillettes de canard (13.50 Eur) au miel, served with sweet potato purée. Duck is always high on my list when visiting France, and this dish did not disappoint. The honey sauce added a touch of sweetness that complemented the rich flavor of the duck beautifully, while the sweet potato purée brought a creamy and slightly sweet accompaniment that worked surprisingly well with the meat. It was comforting and satisfying without feeling too heavy.

Of course, no meal at a bouillon would be complete without dessert and we decided to sample three classics. First came the crème brûlée (4.20 Eur), with its silky custard hidden beneath a crisp caramelized sugar crust. Next was the mousse au chocolat (chocolate mousse - 3.50 Eur), a dessert that may look simple but is often one of the most satisfying items on a French menu. Rich, airy, and intensely chocolatey, it checked all the boxes. Finally, we ordered the île flottante (3.50 Eur). This dessert is one I feel deserves more attention in the United States because it is surprisingly difficult to find there. Consisting of delicate poached meringue floating on vanilla custard and often finished with caramel, it is elegant while remaining wonderfully light. A must have!

Bouillon Grenette perfectly captured what makes bouillons so appealing. There is no need for elaborate presentations or complicated concepts when the food is rooted in French culinary traditions and prepared with care. A must visit.
Enjoy (I did)!
